One of my favorite Heliconia of all time. Why? Because not only does it have an AWESOME screaming red hanging pendant flower, but also because it is easy to grow in Florida and it is a very consistent bloomer in my garden.
On top of all that, it has a unique white waxy coating over its stalks and leaves, especially the undersides. This not only looks very cool and unsual, but it makes it easy to identify when not in bloom.
Helicona collinsiana likes a sunny location (70-90% sun) with humidity and moist, rich soil. I keep mine quite dry over winter to prevent any rhizome rot. Gets up to 8 feet tall and produces a knockout bloom that is ideal for the tropical rainforest look!
