Heliconia plagiotropa has proven to be a tough grower and reliable bloomer in my Brevard County Florida garden. Whats great about this Heliconia is that is is a bit more compact, growing to about 4 feet. It then puts out a bright red upright bloom that staircases at the top of the stalks above all the deep green foliage.
Heliconia Plagiotropa is easy to grow- just give it plenty of sunlight (70-95%) humidity and rich moist soil. It loves timed release fertilizer like Osmocote and organics such as fish emulsion. I keep it on the dry side over winter to avoid rhizome rot if it gets cold. This is a one is quite hard to come by, but I highly recommend it!
